Most film buffs fail to notice that a lot of their favorite movies have been filmed in Orange County, California. Since Anaheim is only 20 miles (32.2 kilometers) away from downtown Los Angeles, some of these blockbuster and unpopular movies were shot in Orange County.

Ocean’s Eleven

One of the most popular heist movies of all time is the movie, Ocean’s Eleven. This 2001 crime and thriller movie centers around eleven individuals planning and executing a big heist. Some of the scenes in the movie were filmed at the University of California’s Gillespie Neuroscience Research Facility on weekends and late at night.

Catch Me If You Can

The 2002 film, starring award-winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, was the highest-grossing movies when released. Some of the movie’s iconic scenes were filmed in the Old County Courthouse in Santa Ana.

American Sniper

Based on a true autobiography of a Navy S.E.A.L. sniper, the American Sniper is an action-packed film produced in 2014. Some of its scenes, such as in Seal Beach, were filmed around Orange County.

A Scanner Darkly

The 2006 animated film starring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder was one film that most people do not know. Some of the movie’s scenes were shot on a freeway along Northbound I-5 in Anaheim.

As the tag says, everything is not going to be ok. After watching this complete head scratcher of a film which deals with the issues of identity, trust and how we perceive the world around us, I can honestly agree that I did not feel "ok". Based on a story by Phillip K Dick, the films decision to use rotoscoping over the visuals makes it have a living comic book feel. The characters onscreen feel textured, like you could actually reach out and crumple them like a sheet of paper. This visual only heightens the sense of unease for the viewer as we try to piece together seemingly disparate threads into a larger conspiracy & never really allows us to fully relax ourselves due to repeated dip into the uncanny valley. As with a lot of Dick's work, the theme of identity, the loss of trust & ever creeping paranoia once you begin to question whether everyone & everything around you is as it seems, is brilliantly realised by an ensemble cast led by Keanu Reeves who always seems to do his best work when his characters are seemingly one step out of the loop. This is a difficult film to write about without the risk of giving away the core of what makes it such a compelling story, so I won't try. True it's not necessarily a film for a wider audience appeal, but something tells me that based on Dick's own rejection of society & established trait as something of a societal misfit, this would suit him just fine. The cast are great, Woody Harrelson doing what Woody does best as strung out junkie layabout. Robert Downey Jr who was no stranger to substance abuse, digs deep to bring a real-world quality to his performance with a real unlikeable streak which makes his character feel lived in. Winona Ryder whose ability to convey vulnerability and detachment is never questioned as her character's motivations are seemingly in constant flux either for or against her own greater good. If you do make it to the end, the odds are you'll want to watch it all over again, just to be able to view it where unlike Keanu, you're now in on the dirty secret. #ascannerdarkly #philipkdick #keanureeves #winonaryder #robertdowneyjunior #woodyharrelson

Orange County is a popular location for different kinds of movies and a Mecca for film buffs of all ages!
